English-born players are a fast-declining minority who barely make up 40 per cent of those on show. The personnel in the Premiership last year came from 61 different countries, including Morocco, Ecuador and Zimbabwe. Yet these days a growing number have Christian names such as Paolo, Stern, Kolo and Marian. Traditionally England's 92 clubs were staffed almost entirely by players from Britain and Ireland. Somehow, 125 years later, England now has the most cosmopolitan league on earth, with more foreign players and more nationalities represented than anywhere else.
